Registration Process of Puppies

Who registers the new litter?
The onus is on the Breeder to register the litter of puppies

What are the requirements to be able to register a litter of puppies See RBC Information leaflet  and HD Table for detailed information

  • Both parents must be x-rayed for Hip Dysplasia and have hips scores within the prescribed range. See HD Table
  • Male must be 18 months+ at the date of mating
  • Female must be 22 months+ at the date of whelping
  • All puppies must be positively identifiable  by having a microchip

Where does the Breeder register the puppies?
The puppies are registered with KUSA (Kennel Union of Southern Africa)

Does the Breeder have to a member of KUSA to be able to register a litter of puppies?
YES

Does the Breeder have to have a Kennel name to be able to register a litter of puppies?
NO

When does a Breeder register the puppies?
Most Breeders only send the Registration papers to KUSA when the puppies are about 6 to 8 weeks of age. However, registration of the puppies must be done within four (4) months of the birth of the puppies. If this is not done, the breeder will have to pay penalties on the registration of each puppy.

Are there any special forms to fill in to register puppies?
Yes. These forms can be obtained from KUSA

How long does it take to register puppies?
Provided the application for registration is fully and correctly completed and the necessary fees received, the Registration Certificates are normally returned (from KUSA) to the breeder within ten working days.

However, if the application is NOT correctly completed and/or the fees are incorrect, the time taken depends on how quickly the breeder deals with the problems.  Normally, problems are sorted out within a week or two but they could take considerably longer, especially in the case of a dog being imported where foreign documents are awaited.

How does the new owner get his registration papers?
Normally the registration papers are sent back to the Breeder. Therefore the onus is on the Breeder to give the papers to the new owners.

HOWEVER, please check on a regular basis with the Breeder of your puppy if he has received the papers.
