Should my bitch first have a litter before I have her spayed?

The question first would be: WHY DO YOU WANT YOUR BITCH TO HAVE A LITTER?

Please read the section on "I want to breed with my dogs"

No harm can come to your dog if you  have her spayed before she produces a litter. Once again, the main reason why one would want to breed should be to improve the breed.

If you have a unregistered dog, you don't really know the history of the parents and grand-parents of your dog. Therefore, to a certain extent, you are going to breed blindly with her. Have both dogs been tested for Hip Dysplasia. If not, this is another good reason not to breed.  Remember, there are minimum requirements laid down by the Rottweiler Breed Council of KUSA regarding the registration of puppies.  Please note, these standards do not necessarily apply to other breeds.

We would, however, suggest that if you opt to have your bitch spayed, do not do this before the age of 12 months as much of the dog's development happens in the first year. Having her spayed before the age of 12 months can inhibit some of this development.  Having a litter of puppies before she is 22 months will also stunt her development. By this time she should be going on heat for the second time.

The only side effect of having your bitch spayed (if she has had a litter of puppies or NOT), is that she might pick up some weight but a little more exercise and watching her diet can solve this.
