| I want to
breed with my dogs! |
There are quite a few things to
consider if you want to breed with your dogs...
- Do
you want to make money?
- Do
you want your bitch to have one litter before you have her spayed
- Are
you willing to incur the cost for proper breeding?
- Why
do you want to breed?
- Is
it your intention to improve the Rottweiler Breed?
If
you have answered YES to the first two questions and NO to number three, then you are
definitely in it for the totally wrong reasons and should not even consider
breeding.
If
you have answered NO to question one and two and YES to question three, then you
are probably doing it for the right reasons and can consider breeding with your
dogs.
There
should be only ONE reason to breed with your dogs..
TO
PRODUCE QUALITY PUPPIES and IMPROVE THE BREED!
One
of the best ways to improve the breed is to stay within the guidelines of the Rottweiler
Breed Council. They have laid down rules that state the following:
-
You
may not breed with a bitch if she is not at least 22 months of age
-
You
many not use a male dog on her if he is not at least 18 months of age
-
Both
the Sire and the Dam must have been x-rayed for Hip Displasia and both
parents should have hip results of at least 1:1 or better (See new
regulations)
-
When
the puppies are born, they have to be identifiable, either by Microchip or
Tattoo
These
are the minimum requirements that you should have to be able to register your
puppies with KUSA.
There
are however a couple of other considerations and thoughts that you might want to
ponder on…
- If
you own the bitch, select a male dog that complements your dog. In other
words, if you own a male Rottweiler as well, he might not necessarily be the best suitable mate for your bitch.
- Show
your dog in a Breed show. (Preferably under a Specialist Rottweiler Judge).
This will give you a very good indication on how well your Rottweiler
compares to the Breed standard.
- If
you are trying to breed better quality dogs, it is important to compare your
dog to the Breed Standard. Make sure everything is intact, as the Breed
Standard requires. Eg. Male dogs should be entire, both the dog and bitch
must have a full set of dentition, both dogs should have a dark eye colour,
neither dog should not be shy or vicious, etc.
The easiest way to determine this is to show under a Specialist Rottweiler
Judge because they are trained to be able to see the good and the bad points in
your dog.
- If
you want to take it even further, you might even want to consider putting
your dog through a Breed Assessment Test.
In this test the dog is very carefully scrutinized and judged by TWO
Rottweiler specialist judges. After the Test the dog is then declared Breed
Suitable OR Breed Not Suitable.
- If
you are still unsure about what to do, talk to some of the more experienced
breeders. Most of them will not mind sharing information and thoughts with
you.
